I look at organization the same as goal setting, as they both have tasks that will assist in growth. Many times people say they are to busy to plan or goal set or the one I like the best is "I'm way to busy to get organized!". For those of you that remember Steven Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" One of his habits was what he called sharping the saw. For those that never hear the story, it goes something like this... Sharpening The Saw!One day a New lumber jack was sawing down trees with his sharp saw, going as fast as you ever have seen. He kept cutting trees from morning to night cutting down 10 trees that day. Extremely proud of himself as he watched the veteran lumber jack who has been cutting trees for years only cut down 8 trees that same day. The next day he decided to really show off to the veteran lumber jack and proclaimed he was going to out do yesterday and cut down 12 trees today. As he was cutting he noticed the veteran lumber jack stopping after each tree to work on his saw for about a half hour then begin another tree, repeating the same process tree after tree. He wondered to himself why the veteran lumber jack would be wasting so much time with that saw? As this new lumber jack began to saw away he noticed that the trees were getting harder and it was taking him much more time to saw down a tree. In fact he only cut 6 trees that second day, and found the work twice as hard also. Confused and feeling weak, he decided that the problem was he celebrated to much the day before and needed rest. So right after work he said, I'll go home and rest really well and tomorrow I'll be able to cut the 12 trees I thought I would today. The next day to his amazement, he worked even harder, yet found he only cut 4 trees down. Confused and belittled he went to the veteran lumber jack and asked what is going on? I cut and cut all day long without stopping or taking any breaks and here you are cutting a tree down then stopping for well over a half hour? Yet you're cutting at least twice as many trees as I am? The veteran lumber jack sits him down and in a quite manner, says I spend that half hour sharping my saw, so that it is as sharp on the second tree as it was on the first. What Does Sharpening The Saw Have To Do With Organization? Many of us have been programed to think we need to move fast and if we fall behind it is because we aren't working hard enough. The story tells us to step back and discover where we could make our organization better with less energy. The list of tips, tricks, and techniques below are all ways to sharpen your saw, or better yet ways to make your life easier and less stressful. So check out the tips that could make your life easier and so that you do not have to work so hard at keeping your life full and passionate. - DO LIKE ACTIVITIES ALL TOGETHER
Instead of starting a project and stopping in the middle of it, save yourself time and energy by doing all the things you can that are similar together. Examples: If you are spending time making phone calls do all of the required calls at the same time, or if you are driving around doing errands plan them all and map out to do them in a methodical manner, etc. - USE ONE CALENDAR
I see so many people have two or three calendars, one for work and one for personal life which causes energy loss trying to remember what you were planning when you are looking at the wrong calendar. One calendar helps eliminate any scheduling conflicts. - FINISH EVERY DAY IN CELEBRATION
If you save the things you love to do for last things of the day, you will finish on a high note. Along with that you will be able to look at some of your accomplishments and pat yourself on the back for a good days work. - KEEP YOUR DESK ORGANIZED
Decide on all the supplies you would possibly need to keep your self working. Ensure you have a good supply of pens with different color ink, pencils, pencil sharper, paper clips, stapler, staples, scissors, tacks, and anything else that would give you an excuse to stop working. Have a place for each item and remember to put it back when you are finished. - DONATE OUTDATED OR UNUSED COMPUTER EQUIPMENT
Many of the new computer don't carry software disks any more so why do you still have them? Are you hanging on to CDs, computer manuals, parts from your last repair, etc. that you'll never touch again? Give them away or throw them out! - IF YOU HAVEN"T TOUCH IT IN A YEAR THROW IT OUT!
Many times we hold on to things thinking, some day I'll use that! Some day never comes and if it does will you really remember that you have something stored in a box you haven't touched in over a year. Throw it Out! - YOUR TIP, TRICK, OR TECHNIQUE HERE!
