Consultants
What Are They?

Consultants are professional coaches who provide advice. They usually are experts or professionals in a specific field and have a wide knowledge of the subject matter, giving the clients access to a deeper level of expertise.

So what is an expert?

An expert is someone who is extremely skilled; having a lot of training, knowledge and experience in a specific field. From this, it follows that a coach must also be an effective learner. They also must be capable of gaining knowledge and skill from experience. A professional coaches must be daring and adventurous willing to try things to see what happens.

Consultants learn about their clients from observing them and it is what they learn about their clients that they eventually share with their clients. A good professional coach will show you what you can not see right in front of you that will bring you your success faster and easier than you expected. When you are finished learning from your professional coach you more than likely will hear yourself say…

"I should have seen that all along!”
At this point you have two choices...
  • You can resent having to pay your fee for them pointing it out to you, or
  • You can pay them with a smile and say “Thank You!” for saving you months if not years to get to the same place.
A professional coach, then, is someone who helps others profit or learn from their own experience. A really good consultant also helps clients see the value of their experience.

Ways Professional Coaches Work

Basically professional coaches provide expertise to clients who require a particular type of knowledge or service for a specific period of time or until success has been reached. They can range from personal issues to business success, and anything in between.

There are many different professional coaches, such as one giving career advice and training to an individual or a team which is often called a coach, and a consultant assisting an organization to develop a new strategy or solve a particular problem is sometimes referred to as a facilitator.

Strategy professional coaches are common in upper management in many industries. There are also independent consultants who act as interim executives with decision-making power under corporate policies or statutes.

Who Hires Professional Coaches?

Businesses large or small, governments and non-profit agencies and individuals all use professional coaches. They hire professional coaches because they need specialized skills or knowledge. In most cases, they hire consultants because they only need the skills or knowledge for a short period of time or they can not afford to hire someone with such a high expertise.

For example, individuals may hire a life coach to get them UN-stuck, small businesses may hire a business coach to build a foundation; medium businesses may need an accountant, tax attorney and an auditor at year-end or at tax time.

Other companies may hire marketing consultants to prepare marketing material for a coming event. A non-profit agency might hire an implementation professional to help roll out a new computer system. Governments might hire writers and editors to help with speeches. Executives may hire career coaches to help them improve their negotiation skills, manage career changes, or other developmental improvements.

Why Use Professional Coaches?

The single most important reason for hiring consultants is to receive a particular set of skills. Consultants’ skills fit into two categories.

  • The first, industry-specific skills – an expert that can teach you the ins and outs of your industry. Ways to run your business affectively building a foundation that can support your growth.
  • The second, issue-specific skills – an expert in a particular issue, problem or opportunity. A few examples could be from brining balance between personal and business life, how to incorporate spirituality into business, or even how to handle complaints.
Let’s face it there are times when you simply need help – meeting up with a bright, energetic person that can assist you. Someone who can help you get your business up and running at a time when it's proving difficult to do it on your own.

Building a small business you are not looking for specialists, but need a professional coach who could be flexible and understand where you are at and can bring you to where you need to go. What happens in small businesses (1 to 20 people) is the owner becomes so involved forgetting about steering the business. Many times they miss opportunities or small problems become so large that they lose everything.

And even if they had time to notice what’s going on around them, how could they be sure what to do in situations they’ve never faced before? A professional coach can provide an invaluable perspective because they're looking at the business with new and trained eyes. A lot of times a professional coach can see enough of the actual situation to solve any problems before they become to final blow to the business.

Do You Need A Professional Coach?

Many people are hesitant to hire consultants, knowing they have all the expertise they could need. Or they decide to hire one, but how can you find a good one? The first rule of thumb is all professional coaches are not created equal.
